The yummy crunchy chicken dipped in spiced tomato sauce
otherwise known as ketch up and eaten with different varieties of rice or fried
chips have stolen the heart of chicken lovers for decades. KFC which stands for
Kentucky Fried Chicken, is one of the many restaurants that sprang from
Southern part of America and have spread to many countries in the world. You
may ask, what makes this chicken special or what should I know about it. Well,
you are about to find out.
Facts About KFC
1. It was founded by Harland Sanders who was born
in 1890 and became responsible for his siblings at the age of six following his
father’s death and his mother’s time exhausting work in a canning factory. He took
over cooking in the Henryville, Ind. Household for about six years.
2. He started the franchising movement in America.
In 1952, he met a restaurant owner called Pete Harman at a food seminar where
they both struck a deal and Harman opened a Kentucky Fried chicken in Salt Lake
City which was successful and spurred other franchisees.
3. Sander’s first gravy tastes better than the
current one. In 1964, less than a decade after branching out into franchising,
there were already over 600 KFC locations in the U.S. and Canada. Sanders was
74 and still running the ship smoothly, but after months of wooing, he was
convinced to sell the company to John Brown Jr. and Jack Massey for $2 million,
an annual salary, and a position as the company’s adviser and spokesman.
Sanders remained deeply involved and invested in the product and promotion
until his death in 1980.
4. Japan uses KFC as Christmas eve dinner. The
first KFC location in Japan opened in 1970. In 1974, KFC had a campaign
proclaiming Kentucky for Christmas (Kurisumasu ni wa kentakki) after carefully
observing the Japanese market. It was so successful it launched a national
tradition. Decades later, Japanese families order their buckets of “Christmas
Chicken” months in advance or face long waiting hours for it.
5. The chicken recipe is a well-kept secret. Sanders
was said to have blended 11 herbs and spice on his first trial. He also wrote
each spice down on a piece of paper. The recipe is being kept at the KFC
headquarter. The information is made available only to a few members of the
company.
